Violin Making and Research

Violins

As renowned violinist, educator and orchestra conductor; Chen has extraordinary concepts and realization of string instruments sounding and playing as individual instrument performance, strings instruments sounding and playing as chamber music, strings instrument sounding and playing as orchestra.  Chen has extraordinary method of doing instruments restorations, repaires, sounding tunning, instruments construction, adjusting, and varnishing.
Chen's organization has collaborated with many rare instruments collectors, world class performers who own rare instruments, and Taiwan Chi-mei museum which is the world renowned museum has over 300 Stradivarius instruments in it's exhibition.
Thomas Chen's organization has developed 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 and full size, high-quality, hand-made violins, violas, and cellos for students. All these instruments are well designed and perfectly hand carved to have wonderful structure; they are carved to be beautiful as well as to produce a masterly crafted. These instruments are made from the highest quality aged European maple and spruce wood, and they are carefully fit with high quality pegs, tailpieces, chinrests and well-carved bridges. These instruments are easy to tune, have wonderful playability, and produce a beautiful sound. Our instrument outfit equipped with elegant CICA E05 cases, hand-carved CICA-A05 bows (made using Brazil sapanwood, ebony cupreous fittings, and high grade Mongolian horse hair), and our CICA Synthetic core strings. With high quality handmade violin, quality bows, and synthetic core strings, students can more easily learn the correct techniques and produce a good sound and proper dynamics; students will be always encouraged and enjoy learning very much with dynamic sounds and beautifully toned instruments. We have developed a series of measurement for our instruments different from most modern instrument producers, because we think it is very important for students to have the rightly sized instrument on which to learn. Today there are many students using wrongly sized instruments to learn because they cannot find the rightly sized instruments on the market. At CICA violin we focus on the size of the instrument because we want students to learn music with the most comfortable posture. With accurately sized instruments students can simply place the bow on the strings and easily create the proper bowing. With wrong size instruments (either too big or too small), students do not feel that playing is comfortable, may receive shoulder injuries from having habitually played using incorrect posture, and may become discouraged and give up the instrument. In order to help students always have the correctly sized instrument on which to play, we have developed a 3/8-size violin between 1/2 and 1/4 -size violins, a 5/8-size violin between 1/2 -size and 3/4-size violins, and 7/8-size violin between 3/4 and 4/4 -size violins. All these different sized violins have been very accurately measured and there is a one-inch difference between most sizes.
